I Would Buy this Product Again


This Apex 4 bike swing away is the best built, best looking, versatile and convenient bike rack I have ever owned/used. With a small SUV, the swing away is great. I have owned for over 4 years, and have had no issues, including any strap breaks. The straps are not expensive, so carry a few spares in trunk,,,just in case (However, as I said, none have broken yet). The rack is left on all season. May have posted this same review to swing away 4 bike Vertex rack site. Sorry, I have the Apex 4 bike swing away.

I ordered this and the Yakima swing away rack in preparation for 10k mile trip. Decided to use the Thule before test driving both. Pros: Swing away is the best design for hatchback, tailgate etc. Still works fine. Integrated bike lock is a good feature. Considering the bouncing of the rack fully loaded, it's a miracle and/or very good design that the rack hasn't failed. Cons: no way to put 4 bikes on it. Brackets to keep bikes from colliding with each other fell off early in the trip. Rubber straps must be pulled very tight, if not you may lose the outboard bike. Almost happened to me. Get extra rubber straps, i've had three break so far. Keep an eye on your mirrors to make sure the screw holding the rack is tight. Road vibration has loosened the screw dangerously while we've been driving. Thule needs to create a locking mechanism for this screw.

Terrible design


About the worst design of a tow hitch assembly I could imagine. This uses a knob mechanism to clinch the inside of the vehicle tow hitch, versus a cross bolt. This results in the rack being not secure (you can simply pull it out of the hitch, not tight (it rattles), and dangerous (I've had to pull over during long trips and literally push the rack back into the vehicle tow hitch - it slides out). The no tow hitch bolt holes make this a really poor design. I've had many Thule products for over 20 years, and I like the brand, but this is a seriously bad product. Avoid it.
