Whether you're out on outdoor adventures or family activities, your bike trailer should be safe and perform as expected every time you use it. Exposure to the elements, dirt and vibrations will affect its performance over time, but with proper care your trailer will remain a reliable companion for years to come.

How often should you maintain your bike trailer?

Regular care and servicing directly affect the safety and performance of your trailer. While maintenance may feel like an afterthought or an added burden, it doesn't have to be. A quick check before and after each ride is enough to avoid the most common issues. Add a more thorough regular inspection and an annual professional service, and you have a solid setup that keeps your trailer in excellent condition. It helps to catch small issues early, before they affect performance or require more significant repairs.

Building your quick routine

A quick check before and after each ride is the single most effective habit for keeping your trailer in good condition.


Before your ride

  • Ensure your trailer is properly attached to your bike. If necessary, tighten any loose screws, bolts or hinges on the hitch or bike arm.
  • Check tire pressure and pump if necessary.
  • Check that the trailer is fully extended after being unfolded. The indicator should read green rather than red. An incorrectly unfolded trailer can damage the frame and compromise safety during use.

After your ride

  • If you have ridden in wet conditions, allow the trailer to dry completely before storing it to prevent mold and odors.
  • If you are using a power bank, remember to detach it and store it indoors.
  • Store your trailer in a dry area away from direct sunlight, which will preserve the fabric over time.

Regular maintenance

In addition to your pre- and post-ride checks, inspect your trailer and its accessories on a regular basis.


  • Check fabric for tears and examine harnesses, straps and buckles for signs of wear, fraying or damage.
  • Clean the trailer using lukewarm water and mild soap only. Harsh cleaners, detergents and solvents will degrade the fabric.
  • Clean the wheel axles and apply lubrication to all moving parts.
  • Inspect metal components, including hitch, fasteners, levers and spokes, for any bends, cracks or damage.
  • Tighten any loose parts and replace missing or damaged fasteners.

If you discover any damage to metal components or rips in the fabric, do not use the bike trailer and reach out to customer service for further assistance. 

When to seek professional service

It’s recommended that at least once per year, or after an extended period of inactivity, to take your trailer to a professional service provider for a thorough inspection and have the wheels serviced.

Troubleshooting and common issues

If you notice a problem with your trailer, the following checks will resolve most issues.


  • Wobbly wheels: Ensure that all bolts and screws are securely tightened. Inspect the wheel spokes and confirm that each one is tight and properly secured.
  • Squeaking wheels: Clean the wheels and remove any dirt or debris. Apply grease or oil to moving parts. 
  • Wheels not rotating correctly: Inspect the tube for rust or debris. Clean thoroughly and apply lubrication. 
  • Trailer dragging: Check that the brakes are not in contact with the wheels. 
  • All-terrain wheel misaligned: Use the small tuning wheel to correct the alignment. 
  • Safety buckle will not open: Check the buckle for trapped dirt or gravel.
