How to Reuse Your Roof Rack With a New Car

Thule roof rack system consists of two or three main components and can be adapted to your specific car depending on what type of fitting for a roof rack it has. When you change your car you might need to change some components or the entire system. To find out what roof rack fits your car, you can go to our roof rack page.

By entering your car model in the fit assistant, you can see all components needed for a complete roof rack system. Add each car at a time to compare the components and see what you can reuse and what parts you will have to order when you change your car.

Roof rack system

We have two different roof rack systems: Thule Evo and Thule Edge. The systems consist of a kit, foot and a roof bar. The length of the bar depends on the width of your vehicle and the used system, Evo or Edge. The kit set is specially developed to fit the specific dimensions of your vehicle and the foot is adapted to the roof of the car. For cars with raised rails, the kit is not needed.

Two generations of roof racks

During September 2019 we upgraded our roof racks which means we have two generations of roof racks.

If your roof rack was purchased before September 2019 you have our previous generation of roof racks, or even an older generation. The bars from the previous generations still fit our current generation of roof rack feet, but you cannot combine old feet packs with new kits. If your new car is released after 2019 you might not be able to reuse our feet packs and kits.

Our roof rack tool can help you find out what you can and what you cannot reuse from your roof rack system. In most cases you’re allowed to use a longer roof bar on Evo systems but on older generations of Edge only the kit can be changed. If it is possible to reuse your roof bar we recommend you to order new feet packs and kits customized for your car. If it’s not possible, we recommend you to sell the system to buy a new one.
