What size crate for your dog?
Choosing the right size dog crate is important for your dog's comfort, safety, and well-being during travel. The crate should allow your dog to sit, stand, turn around, and lie down in a natural position. However, it shouldn't be so large that your dog slides or is tossed around during travel, as this can lead to discomfort or injury.
Every dog is different—use the guidance here as a starting point, but ultimately, you know your dog best. Consider their comfort, habits, and how they travel. Also, make sure to follow any local recommendations regarding pet travel.
How to measure your dog:
To ensure the crate is the right fit, measure your dog’s wither height (the height from the ground to the top of the shoulder blades).
Guideline for choosing crate size:
Single crate sizes:
- XS: For dogs with a wither height of up to 42 cm. (Example breeds: Miniature Schnauzer, Jack Russell)
- S: For dogs with a wither height of up to 50 cm. (Example breeds: Beagle, Cocker Spaniel)
- M and M Compact: For dogs with a wither height of up to 57 cm. (Example breeds: Border Collie, Australian Shepherd)
- L and L Compact: For dogs with a wither height of up to 61 cm. (Example breeds: Labrador Retriever, Dalmatian)
- XL and XL Compact: For dogs with a wither height of up to 65 cm. (Example breeds: German Shepherd, Boxer)
- XXL and XXL Compact: For dogs with a wither height of up to 70 cm. (Example breeds: Rottweiler, Rhodesian Ridgeback)
