What roof racks do I need for a rooftop tent?

Before mounting a rooftop tent to your car roof, one component matters more than any other. The roof rack system. Roof racks are the foundation that connects your vehicle to your rooftop tent and ensure stability, safety and long-term durability both on the road and at camp.

Understanding how roof racks work, and how to choose the right ones for rooftop tent use, helps you build a setup that feels secure from the first drive to the last night outdoors.

Why you need roof racks for a rooftop tent

A rooftop tent never mounts directly to the roof of your car. Instead, it attaches to roof racks that are designed to transfer load safely to the vehicle’s structural mounting points.

When properly selected, roof racks:

  • Distribute weight evenly across the roof
  • Keep the tent stable during driving and braking
  • Provide the correct support for the tent’s base

Roof racks that are not designed or approved for rooftop tent use may work for lighter accessories, but they are not always suitable for the higher and more concentrated loads created by a tent.

What to consider when choosing roof racks for a rooftop tent

Load ratings and safety
Roof racks must support the combined weight of the rooftop tent and the racks themselves while driving. This is known as the dynamic load. As long as this limit is respected, the system is engineered to safely support people inside the tent when the car is parked. Choosing roof racks with sufficient load ratings provides confidence not only on the highway, but also on uneven roads and longer journeys.

Vehicle-specific compatibility

Cars differ in roof design. Some have raised rails, others flush rails, fixed mounting points or smooth roofs. Roof rack systems are developed to match these differences precisely.

A vehicle-specific fit:

  • Improves stability
  • Reduces unwanted movement or noise
  • Protects the car’s roof and mounting points

This tailored approach is why roof racks cannot be used interchangeably between all vehicles, even if they appear similar at first glance.

Crossbar type and spacing
Rooftop tents require a specific distance between crossbars to ensure proper support. Roof rack systems designed for rooftop tents take this into account so the tent can sit securely without unnecessary stress on the mounting hardware. Bar design also plays a role. Some crossbars focus on aerodynamics and reduced wind noise, while others prioritise maximum strength. Both approaches can work for rooftop tents as long as the system is tested and recommended for that purpose.

Choosing roof racks recommended for rooftop tents

Not every roof rack system is intended to carry a rooftop tent. Systems recommended for rooftop tent use are tested for higher loads and designed to handle the specific demands of roof-mounted camping.

Using a recommended system means:

  • The rack has been tested with tent-style loads
  • The mounting interface matches rooftop tent hardware
  • Long-term durability has been considered

This removes uncertainty and helps ensure that your setup performs as intended over time.

What roof racks do we recommend and why?

Thule recommends a selected range of roof rack systems that are designed to provide the right balance of load capacity, durability and vehicle-specific fit for rooftop tent use. These recommended systems are tested to support the unique demands of rooftop tents, including the higher static loads created when the tent is in use.

What roof rack fits my car?

To ensure the correct fit for each vehicle, Thule uses a vehicle-specific Fit Guide. The Fit Guide helps match your car with the appropriate roof rack system, ensuring proper attachment, correct load distribution and long-term reliability.

Thule rooftop tents are compatible with most Thule roof rack systems. However, they are not designed to be used with roof rack systems that consist of Clamp feet. Using a rooftop tent with these systems may result in excessive static load when people are inside the tent, which can cause damage to the roof rack and or the vehicle.
