It works but...

About Me Intermediate
Comments about Thule Slipstream 887XT:
I needed something to help me lift my 55 pound, 14' kayak on to my Subaru Forester. Found the Slipstream in the "as is" closet at Eastern Mountain Sports. Couldn't pass it up because of the discounted price. It works but there are a few improvements that could be made. First, there should be an adapter so it can easily slide into the grooves on Aerobars. It fits oddly onto the aerobars and can sometimes shift which causes the screws of the feet to dig into the aerobars. Unfortunately it chewed up my rubber grip strip (picture included). So, I took a bicycle tire, cut it into 6" strips and then cut the strips open to make the rubber wider. I put the strip under the wrack feet to prevent the rubber grip strip from shredding and the screws from digging into the aerobars.Second, there are four knobs you have to loosen in order to pull the load assist bar out and then you have to tighten them so when you lift the kayak on the load assist bar it does not slide in on you. Well, that's all a lot of work so I only tighten the one know. Once the kayak is loaded I tighten the rest. The m6 knobs are hard to turn because they are set in to the feet and bump against the sides. Finally, Thule recommends setting the rack on the ground with kayak on top so you can adjust the saddle width and distance. I found them hard to reach so I flipped my kayak upside down and then the rack upside down.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Lost respect for Thule after this product

About Me Advanced
So I purchased this to replace the Thule j hooks that I had and was sadly disappointed with the product but more so with Thule. My kayak is well with in the recommended width but because it's a fishing kayak, not a flat bottem, the boat doesn't sit right. I had one instance where the yak actually slid off the feet and was just sitting on the roof. I contacted Thule and the response was that this product isn't recommended for all kayak, even if it's ith in the width recommendations. I asked them what could be done to get me an appropriate product and their response was nothing because it wasn't purchased directly from them. Wishful thinking that a manufacturer stands behind its product.

I have used this to carry sea kayaks, canoes, sailing canoes, wave skis, SUP boards and even a small sailboat. I don't recommend doing the sailboat thingy. What I really like is that this system spreads out the support area between the two sets of cradles. This better supports the hull that is being transported if the vehicle factory rack has a closely spaced footprint like on my Honda.
