very noisy on jeep wrangler
from Toronto, Ontario
Comments about Thule Spare Me™ 963PRO:
I must be doing something wrong. but this is a bike rack not too complicated here. firstly the securing knob doesn't stay tight no matter what I do, chalked it up to a design feature. secondly the noise it makes on me jeep with two bikes is disgusting. for some reason my tail gate squeaks incessantly with every movement the rack makes. I must be doing something wrong but can't think of what. I think a hitch bike rack is the way to go.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend

great fit for my Jeep and my bikes
By Jen in Bend
from Bend, OR
Was looking for a bike rack that wouldn't get in the way of opening my back Jeep door. Read the reviews and found this on sale. Great price. Installed in 15 minutes. Some people say that their bikes don't fit properly on this rack. My answer is get creative. I first tried it at the bike shop where I bought my mountain bike. I hoisted the bike and thought - they're right, how's this going to fit? A sales guy approached and lifted the bike up - putting one of the brackets on the tube that connects the seat and the other on the front v of the frame. It held tight and was very secure. I used the strap enclosed with the rack to stabalize the bike by wrapping it around the bike and rack. Bike did not wiggle or shake at all while driving. I've had two bikes on the rack several times with similar great results. And I like that the holding bar easily folds down tightly against the wheel when you don't want to use the rack.I love this rack because I can still open my back door without a hitch rack in the way, it was inexpensive, and it works great.

Needed rack to go over spare tire for a triangle mountain bike. Was not told that I would need an adapter bar or that with adapter the chain lock provided does not secure the bike. An expensive omission as I live far from the dealership where I bought it.PS- my pros and cons look incoherent because there is not enough room to express them clearly.
doesn't fit regular sized bikes
from Vancouver, Canada
I had at least 5 friends bring their bikes over to try but the arms of the rack are too wide for any standard sized bike to fit on. I took it back to the retailer and they couldnt get their bike on either. The arms barely fit through the frame but not over the hardware at the neck part. dont waste your money. either it was defective or just poorly designed.

Disappointed with the cradles and posts
from Rochester, NY
I have bought a lot of Thule over the years, never a problem. I own a 4-bike Thule hitch rack, a Thule roof mount system, and two Thule roof mount bike racks. All top quality. This, on the other hand, is not top quality. The cheap cradles are made of some type of rubberized plastic, MUCH different than the top quality sturdy plastic cradles on my hitch rack. My wife could not attach the straps because they were too thick, and the posts way too flimsy and rubbery. I could do it, but only with great difficulty, and now you can see after only one attempt that the posts have stretched to the point of almost breaking off. I am not sure why they decided to put cheaper low quality cradles on this, I am returning it on Monday.

501 answered ALL my needs for transporting my toys in the bed of the truck. Wish there was an option for 2 or 3 bikes at cheaper price.

Holds one bike only on my 01' crv
My wheel is offset, so I needed to offset the position of the rack to bring the bikes more centered. I still can hold only one bike because the second bike's wheel hangs too far out past the edge of the vehicle. I can carry 2-3 bikes in the back area of my crv. I may just revert back to that way of travel, time will tell. The rack does sit securely against the tire.
Does not work with FJ Cruiser

I love Thule products. This one, however, said it worked with my truck and it did not. I had to wrestle with the install, only to find out later that I had to return the rack. Very sad. Thule said it worked with my truck, as did the dealer who sold me the rack. There was no way to get it on.

Fits 99 Isuzu Rodeo, but barely.
from Monrovia, CA
I instructions read this at fits my Isuzu, but my trucks spare tire carrier is different than the ones displayed in the instructions. It required an extra pair of hands to attempt to install the Thule base in between the carrier and the spare tire. My carrier lacked bolts sticking out of it making it diffucult to align the bolt while holding the spare tire and Thule base plate at the same time. Isuzu Rodeo design flaw, not Thule.(Suggestion:I recommend buying 3 bolts (size M12 - 1.5 Thread, 50mm long) and screwing them from behind the carrier so they stick out from the front allowing you to rest your tire on it while you screw the nuts on (Also size M12 - 1.5 thread nut)).The instruction don't really explain in detail some of the parts, and doesn't clearly illustrate where they should be placed. The built in lock that is found inside one of the pipes is too short to do any real security work with it. I suggest getting an additional coil lock for added security. In the end this Rack is great, does the job and looks awesome.I recommend it.
